This is a bright documentary on the subject of peak oil–a sobering sage of our dependence on traditional sunlight to power industrial civilization and the consequences we face as we top over the global oil production peak and enter the irreversible depletion phase. While there are other documentaries that treat the subject, I acquire Vulgar Impact principal, among other reasons, for its focus from the outset on the relationship between the size of the human population and the increasingly intensive extraction of resources.

I snarl a semester-long high school seminar devoted entirely to peak oil and this is the documentary, among other beneficial documentaries on this subject, which I have chosen for viewing by my students. Gross Impact is simply the clearest exposition of peak oil and its far-reaching consequences. The impact has been profound.

Interviews with leading experts in a variety of related fields forward the yarn, which is accompanied by enchanting images, a judicious exhaust of graphics, and haunting musical rep. Indeed the thought of peak oil itself is not fully expanded until later in the documentary after an array economic, political, social, and economic threads are systematically explored–and the elephantine impact of peak oil then becomes frighteningly positive.

If you are recent to the plan of peak oil, this is a must idea which should be shared with relatives and friends. In fact, it should be shared with everyone, even those already “peak oil aware,” which I scare is all too few. Gross Impact is an impressive, if deeply disturbing, documentary.

I was at the screening when the film premiered on IDFA 2 years ago. The entire audience came out after the screening, to continue discussing the matter with the director in the hallway for another hour. I’ve never seen people so moved by an environmental film, and motivated to spread it’s message. Truely a must ogle

This set includes 3 disks with 2 shows per disk, total of 6 episodes. The episodes are:

I believe these sets are privately produced by Amazon, definitely not by the Learning Channel’s production company. This is a bare bones set. NO special features, not even a disk menu to choose episodes on each disk. Discovery did much better with seasons 1-3, these new sets leave much to be desired, and at $5+ per episode, the price is steep. Come on Learning/Discovery- you can do better than this!!!!!

Has Amazon ever cleared up the confusion regarding the version of this movie. The jacket shows the original 1932 version but the cast is from the 1951 remake.

I hope that Amazon will clear up the information listed for this DVD. They list the cast of the remake from the 50’s, they have the aspect ratio as widescreen. Which verson of the film is being offered here?? Please clear this up so that those that order will not be disapointed. I am not even sure that the widescreen verson from the 50’s is even available on DVD.

“Indian Summer” is a wonderful film saluting “the Golden Era” of Camp Tamakwa (a real camp in the Canadian/New York wilderness), but it’s also about reconnecting with youth, friends, love and nature. Uncle Lou (Alan Arkin), Camp Tamakwa’s camp supervisor for many years, invites campers from “the Golden Era” (the early to mid 1970s) as a reunion of sorts, and a group of friends and ex-campers make the trek back to the woods and their youth. Matt (Vincent Spano) and Kelly (Julie Warner) are on vacation to “work on their marriage;” Matt’s having a mid-life crisis, and Kelly just wants to know where she stands. Jennifer (Elizabeth Perkins) is Matt’s ex-camp-girlfriend and Kelly’s best friend, swept away by the nostalgia of camp. Brad (Kevin Pollack) is Matt’s cousin, business partner, King of the Shreks (camp pranks), and a constant commentator of how small everything’s gotten. Beth (Diane Lane) is a ex-camp tomboy, whose husband Rick recently died. Jack (Bill Paxton), Rick’s best friend, was expelled from camp by Uncle Lou long ago, but still rated an invitation. Jamie (Matt Craven) never really grew up, and brought his young fiance Gwen (Kimberley Williams) up for a week of fun & games. Helping Uncle Lou out is the camp maintenence man, Stick (Sam Raimi, taking a hilarious step from behind the camera). Through the week, these friends reconnect, relive camp memories (first kiss), pulling camp gags (short-sheeting, hand-in-warm-water, etc.), participating in camp activities (the Tamakwa-thon), and working out their various problems. Over these precedings looms the prospect of Uncle Lou closing the camp for good. Everyone does an admirable job; you can actually feel their joy and pain. The photography is beautiful; the washed-out opening credits give way to the awesome colors of the woods in early autumn. The DVD edition says fullscreen, but is thankfully, and deservingly, in WIDESCREEN. This is a funny, touching film filled with the ongoing process of ‘growing pains’, and it’s a special tribute for ‘campers’ and ex-campers alike. Pack your gear, it’s definitely worth the trip.

“Indian Summer” isn’t the sort of film I normally watch. A light comedy about the innocence of childhood contrasted with the problems of adulthood, the film engages in deep sentimentality on a regular basis. I am rarely suckered in by sappy, syrupy movies. “Indian Summer” is different; I first saw the film on cable back in the early 1990s and quickly learned to like its ensemble cast, wonderful scenery, and funny moments. Since I usually watch horror films, the irony of viewing a movie set at a summer camp where no one expires at the hands of a machete wielding madman still makes me chuckle. When I stumbled over a DVD version of “Indian Summer” recently, I knew I had to revisit the movie. I suspected I wouldn’t enjoy it as much as I did ten years ago. I was wrong. The movie resonates even more deeply because I am ten years older than when I first saw it. I never went to summer camp as a child, except for a weekend stay as part of a sixth grade project, but I can completely identify with many of the movie’s themes nonetheless. I think most of us tend to idealize memories of our childhood even if the recollections aren’t as poignant as we would like to think. “Indian Summer” captures perfectly this tendency and throws it back at you with a few laughs.

The owner of Camp Tamakwa, “Uncle” Lou Handler (Alan Arkin), has finally decided to sell his summer camp and retire. He feels that the kids today don’t identify with him like they once did, so he wants to move on. Before he sells, though, he decides to hold a reunion at the camp and invite as many of his former guests as he can. Only seven show up: Jamie Ross (Matt Craven), Beth Warden (Diane Lane), Jack Belston (Bill Paxton), Jennifer Morton (Elizabeth Perkins), Brad Berman (Kevin Pollack), Matthew Berman (Vincent Spano), and Kelly Berman (Jennifer Warner). Ross brings along his young girlfriend Gwen Daugherty (Kimberly Williams), which brings the total to eight. All seven of these people are now in their thirties, with busy lives in the city and a host of adult problems. For example, Brad and Matthew Berman run a clothing company, but Matt wants out so he can pursue his dream of becoming an artist. His wife Kelly, whom he met at the camp as a child, has issues with Matt that could very well lead to divorce. Beth Warden’s husband recently passed away, so she has serious recovery issues with which to deal. Jamie Ross is an arrogant dolt that treats women as objects, perhaps due to some inferiority issues and a fear of growing older. Jennifer Morton is the chain-smoking cynic who has yet to find a husband. And Jack Belston was the one kid kicked out of camp for an unspecified incident, and whose life has since been one long downward spiral.

Camp Tamakwa might not heal all wounds, but it will fix many a problem. As Uncle Lou runs the adults through the daily routine of summer camp, such as sailing, swimming tests, hikes, boxing, and foot races, the old identities of childhood start to reassert themselves. The group complains about the lousy food, play practical jokes on one another (called “shrecks,” for some reason), and generally reconnect with the important things in life. Gradually, problems that seemed insurmountable and best left unsaid in the city come out at Tamakwa. We discover why Lou kicked Belston out of camp, and see the issue resolved. Brad and Matt hash out their business problems, and Kelly learns to stand up to her husband in the boxing ring. Beth learns to face the death of her loved one head on with a little help from Jack Belston. Gwen Daugherty, although not a member of the Tamakwa clique, learns to stand up to her domineering boyfriend and make her issues heard. And the whole group gets a lot of laughs by poking fun at Lou’s clumsy helper Stick Coder (Sam Raimi). By the time the campers leave, they have a better grasp on their personal issues.

Director and scriptwriter Mike Binder has fashioned an immensely enjoyable picture with “Indian Summer.” It is tough to make an ensemble movie with characters and plot threads as well developed as they are here. By the end of the movie, you know these characters intimately. All the actors do a superb job, but special mention goes to Alan Arkin, Kevin Pollack, Bill Paxton, and Julie Warner. I cannot remember a film where Arkin failed to turn in a bravura performance, and he does so again as the benevolent father figure Lou Handler. Paxton has the troubled drifter role down pat, and Pollack charms with his usual humor (no William Shatner impressions here, unfortunately). The incredibly beautiful Julie Warner never fails to catch my eye in any film she is in. She was probably the reason I watched the picture in the first place. The best part of the film happens at the beginning when the adults arrive at the camp and the scenery’s colors suddenly explode into bright brilliancy. What a great way to show the dreariness of adult life compared to the memories of childhood!

“Indian Summer” is definitely worth seeing. Unfortunately, the DVD doesn’t have any extras, not even a commentary track from some of the actors, which would have been nice. I really ought to quit renting this one and just buy a copy. Of course, I would have to hide it behind a mountain of horror movies on the shelf just in case anyone I know happened to see it sitting there. I have a reputation to protect, after all. Give “Indian Summer” a look the next time you’re in the video store. Chances are you will probably enjoy it.

“I Am Legend” is not a film that sticks closely to it’s source material. While that is it’s biggest flaw, it is also where it shines. If you ha told me two years ago that I’d get misty-eyed watching Will Smith sing “Three Little Birds” in a big budget motion picture I’d have laughed myself silly, but this adaptation of Richard Mathson’s untouchable novel that -while itself being a vampire story- inspired the entire zombie film genre as we know it takes the story we all know whether we’ve read the book or not and turns it into an exceptionally personal affair for all of us. One man. One dog. A familiar metropolis deserted by day, but crawling with death by nightfall. This is our setting and it’s one that never gets old for me.

The plague that wipes out Robert Neville’s world is never fully explained, simply inferred to be the result of some sort of failed cure for cancer. Gone from the novel and the original Vincent Price classic, The Last Man on Earth, is the long struggle of Neville to save his ill daughter, his wife’s tranformation, and the shocking actions of the US government to contain the plague. What it left is simply one man, alone trying to maintain his sanity and hopelessly searching for a cure to a disease that has already wiped humanity off the face of the earth and left the “survivors” as rabid vampiric horrors. It’s sad, it’s pathetic, and it’s perfectly human. Will Smith has a penchant for picking terrible, schmaltzy films to star in, but no one can deny his talent and charisma as a leading man. Naturally, this is a film he must carry single-handedly and he does an awesome job of it; he’s dramatic, he’s relateable, and at times, he is funny. The humor is that of the dark and inappropriate kind, but in a world like his, that is all there is left.

The vampires/zombies/infected in this are all CG and more than a bit reminiscent of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. I’m not a fan of these kind of effects when practical would have been more effective and was acutely aware of the fact that I watching computer-generated monsters, but they worked nonetheless. The infected prove to be terrifying foes for Neville to face, combining suprising cunning, inhuman strength, and impossible agility (hence the CG). Their only weakness is that sunlight kills them almost instantly. Neville plays a game of cat-and-mouse with them, gathering supplies, researching cure, and searching for survivors by day while making sure to get back to his fortified apartment before nightfall when the creatures come out to hunt for his hiding place. More than a few shades of 28 Days Later are present in this film, which is funny considering the book and it’s film offspring are largely what provided the elements of that film. So I guess the genre has officially come full circle now.

Ultimately, it’s the personal touches that make “I Am Legend” such a treat. Bob Marley provides both the soundtrack to Robert Neville’s day and the inspiration for his work, which is both ironic and uplifting at times. This may sound strange for a horror flick, but if you are a fan of Marley (himself a Legend) it makes all the sense in the world as you watch. Watching Neville attempt to interact with mannequins he’s set up as he returns the movies he rents (in alphabetical order, one at a time) and seeing him snap when one of the figures is moved is both amusing and, at times, intensely disturbing. When relief finally comes, Neville finds he has lost the ability to interact with other humans at all and is relegated to performing lines from “Shrek”, which is playing on his television at the time. The ending is a complete 180 from the book which is disappointing, but not as corny as it could have been. The novel I Am Legend has one of the most brilliant and darkly ironic endings ever put on paper, but director Francis Lawrence didn’t ruin it by go for the happy ending either. The result is a compromise between the pitch blackness of the book and the cloying cheese that many Will Smith fans love. It turns out a bittersweet and hopeful conclsion that should satisfy both while not thrilling either. But I left the theater with “Redemption Song” still ringing in my ears and a satisfied feeling. If only every movie could do that for me.

“I Am Legend” fails to adapt the book of the same name to the big screen, but succeeds in so many other ways. I can’t give it a perfect score, but I will give it a very hearty recommendation to fans of Will Smith, zombies, vampires, and Bob Marley. Enjoy.

I Am Legend can’t get a fair shake. This Will Smith-led production is the third attempt Hollywood has made to adapt the brilliant novel. None of the adaptions have truly done the novel justice (which is a shame), but this version has come the closest.

Here we have a brilliant beginning; footage of a scientist (played beautifully by Emma Thompson) saying humbly that she’s discovered a way to cure cancer. Fast forward a few years, and New York is utterly devoid of human life, save for Robert Neville (Will Smith). As the first half of the film progresses, we learn about his meager living, spending the day harvesting and trying to discover a cure, even now, while spending the night huddled in his protected home as creatures prowl.

His only companion, a wonderful dog named Sam, protects Neville as Neville protects him. They have a friendship based on loneliness and the human need for someone or something to hold onto. Sam is Neville’s only connection to the past and the only way to represent what little humanity is left, either in the world or Neville himself. This period in the movie is pitch perfect, puncuated by one or two terrifying sequences that instill genuine horror.

Unfortunately, the last half of the film deteriorates into an action movie that completely changes the meaning of the words “I Am Legend.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s mostly done really well. Constantine director Francis Lawrence has a good handle on the action and delivers some good scenes. But, it becomes muddled and veers off completely from the novel. My biggest complaint, though, is the use of CGI. Instead of using real flesh and blood actors, all of the creatures are created with CG and they look incredibly fake when lined up next to real people. In the beginning, it’s not a problem but as you see more of them (and you will) it’s glaringly obvious. And annoying.

All of this I was expecting going in, though. Considering that the film was co-written by Akiva Goldsman who also wrote I, Robot, I knew this version would stray from the source material just as I, Robot did. As a movie, it’s genuinely thrilling and creates the perfect balance of tension and action through most of its entirety. And, surprisingly, Will Smith shows that he’s a really good actor as he has to not only tackle many conflicting emotions during the two hour run time but he also has to do so without having much of anyone to react to. Spending a good hour or so without another single actor for Will Smith to work with was a gamble and it paid off.

Your enjoyment of the film is entirely based on what you bring to the table. If you’re coming to this film expecting to see the book come to life you’ll be sorely disappointed. However, if you’re looking for a good action movie that actually has a good story and a human aspect, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one as thrilling recently.
