I first saw this movie in France and absolutely fell in love with it. I live in the states and when I rented it in the U.S. I could not understand why Eric Serra’s soundtrak was not used and why they cut out so many scenes and changed the ending (what a bad call! ). I strongly recommend to all Americans who saw the American version to do yourselves a favor and buy the DVD Director’s Cut(Version Longue). It’s a completely different movie (so to speak). This is definitely my all time favorite movie, and am ecstatic to have it on DVD. Yeahhh! Thanks to Amazon the Americans will finally have their chance to own a phenominal movie!

I first read about Le Grand Bleu in one of my textbooks when I started lessons at the Alliance Francais. There it was described along the lines of a massive cult movie that had charmed (and completely depressed) a whole generation of french teenagers. Being fifteen at the time, I got hold of a very beat up copy and it has since remained my favorite film of all times.
Jacques, the main character, is a solitary free diver who longs for nothing else than to be at home with his family (i.e. swimming in the sea with dolphnins). That is, until he meets Johanna (Arquette), and soon the story develops and reaches its climax as Jacques is torn between the woman he loves and his quest for the eternal and watery bliss he finds in the depths. The photography is simply perfect, and the transfer to digital media has only enhanced the fact, so definitely get the DVD. Reno is at his finest (and funniest) and Barr stands out as the perfect homo delphinus.
I have seen the US version, which is a moldy disgrace. The omission of Eric Serra’s music is utter blasphemy, since the soundtrack is a jewel on its own. The change in ending is also nonsense, so if you have only seen that piece of editing, know that the Director’s Cut is entirely different.
Oh, and don’t forget. Dolphins, dolphins and more dolphins! What could beat that? I cry every time I see this film. Perhaps this is only because of my weird self, but, what do you think really happens to Jacques in the end?

A unique and highly informative 6-part documentary that examines the establishment and development of the Auschwitz-Birkenow concentration camp within the historical context of the Nazi’s changing strategies and goals during the Second World War. Using historical photographs, filmed re-enactments, recent interviews with both survivors and perpetrators, and computer models based on recently discovered blueprints of the camp, the filmmakers painstakingly trace the evolution of Auschwitz from a detainee facility built to house Polish prisoners, to a forced labor camp, and finally, to an infamous and horrifyingly efficient factory devoted to mass murder. Brilliantly and movingly narrated by actress Linda Hunt (Oscar-winner for “The Year of Living Dangerously”), the 4-1/2 hour series is intellectually stimulating, educationally astonishing, and emotionally overwhelming as it attempts the almost impossible task of explaining the incomprehensible. That “Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State” succeeds so well in its mission is a testament to the commitment and skill of the filmmakers.

The DVD also includes a revealing interview with filmmaker Lawrence Rees, who produced the series; and a series of six short interview segments with Holocaust and genocide authorities, each of which is hosted by esteemed journalist Linda Ellerbee. These interviews, originally designed to air as companion pieces to the six parts of the documentary, are invaluable tools in providing modern day context to the lessons and legacy of Auschwitz, and a framework in which to consider the ongoing horror of genocide. Literate and immensely powerful, this 2-disc DVD set is most highly recommended viewing for those wishing to educate themselves about one of the darkest chapters in all of human history.

No film or documentary could ever fully cover the enormity of the Shoah, everything that went on, every last aspect, but this one really hits the mark on the area of the Shoah it chose to focus on. This three-part documentary focuses on Oswiecim-Brzezinka (Auschwitz-Birkenau) in general and on the inner-workings of the camp, the blueprints for genocide, in particular. There are interviews with people who were actually there (on both sides), multiple historical re-enactments, pictures, documents, diagrams, blueprints, plenty of narration, you name it. We start from the beginning, the seeds that led to genocide and the first baby steps towards it (euthanising the mentally ill in Germany), to the creation of the camp and some of its first victims, such as the orphaned French children (prior to early 1942 the camp had only housed male Polish political prisoners and criminals), and finally to the period of the camp’s highest murder rate, the arrival of Hungarian Jewry starting in May of 1944, through to liberation, what happened to the survivors, how some of the people in charge were caught and brought to justice, and how some, such as Mengele, were never. We also get, along the way, information about some of the other death camps, such as Treblinka, and how that camp did not start out as a model camp (it was run so “inefficiently,” not enough people murdered quickly enough and then disposed of in a quick and speedy matter, that the person running the camp, “Dr.” Irmfried Eberl, was dismissed). Also included are episodes about how the power corrupted many of the Nazis running or working at the camp, sometimes leading to intrigue. It was also a welcome change of pace for there to be a segment on the notorious sadistic Irma Grese (who was hanged for crimes against humanity shortly after the War); too often all these kinds of books and documentaries talk about are male Nazis, when history shows that there were a number of women, such as Grese, who were equally cold, brutal, top-ranking, and sadistic. The extras are also very good, featuring some very insightful interviews with a variety of people, on topics such as why genocide is still allowed to occur, what we have learnt from the Shoah, and young peoples’ reactions to the documentary.

Glad they are releasing vol 2 of Power Rangers RPM. This season is proving to be one of the best of all the 17 seasons so far, and especially after the last few seasons. RPM takes place in the future when the earth is ruled by machines and pollution has forced the last surviving humans to retreat into the last surviving city, the domed city of Corintth. This vol 2 DVD shows how each of the rangers lives become intertwined and wind up in Corinth.

An excellent addition for any power rangers fan or even a non fan. Everyone can enjoy vol 1 and 2 of Power Rangers RPM for it has a more mature feel to it.

Since 1993, “Power Rangers” has become a part of the lives of people who grew up with the series. Known as a “sentai” series (sentai means task force, typically given to Japan’s yearly shows featuring a superhero group) from Japan that has become it’s own in America and Europe.

Now in its 17th year, the series “Power Rangers RPM” continues the popular sentai-line based on the Japanese series “Engine Sentai Go-onger” and is shown on ABC Kids. This time the series definitely has its change in production with the series now being produced in New Zealand and instead of a storyline of the rangers trying to protect a city, the storyline of humanity is a bit more dismal.

“Power Rangers RPM” takes place three years after a computer virus known as Venjix took over every computer on Earth and an army of robot droids was created to destroy humanity. The only chance for human survival is to live in a domed city known as Corinth which is protected by a force field.

Humans who have traveled long and far to get to Corinth find themselves being aided by a the Power Rangers who take on monsters who wait around the city to attack any incoming humans. In order to let the humans in, the force field of Corinth has to be lowered and thus, the Power Rangers must be ready at all times to fight and protect the last safe haven for humanity.

The Power Rangers RPM consists of:

* Scott Truman (Red Ranger) - A former pilot of the Air Force Eagle Squadron, he must learn to lead the team and also deal with the military’s colonel, his father Mason Truman.

* Flynn McAllistair (Blue Ranger) - The Scottish who always has dreamed of being a superhero. Learned his knowledge of mechanics from his father.

* Summer Landsdown (Yellow Ranger) - A former rich and spoiled heiress, she knows how to fight and become a team member.

* Ziggy Grover (Green Ranger) - A former member of Fresno Bob’s criminal organization, he is like a modern day Robin Hood. With the exception that he is rather clumsy, can’t really fight and is all talk.

* Dillon (Black Ranger) - Not much is known about Dillon. He has no recollection of his past at all.

Other Characters:

* Dr. K - The young scientist (and the world’s genius) who created the technology for Power Rangers RPM. Lacks emotion (especially a sense of humor) and is always focused on her work.

* Colonel Mason Truman - Father of Scott (Red Ranger) and overprotective of him, especially since his other son was killed during battle.

* Tenaya 7 - A Generation-7 Gynoid that is created by Venjix and resembles a human and in the earlier episodes, the main nemesis of the Power Rangers. Despises humanity.

Included on “Race for Corinth” (volume 2) are episodes 6-10. Here is a list of the episode plus spoiler-less summaries:

* EPISODE 6 - Ranger Green - Ziggy’s past of working with a criminal organization but how he used his position to help others.

* EPISODE 7 - Ranger Red - The story of Scott and his brother and how tragedy help him become a leader.

* EPISODE 8 - Ranger Yellow Part 1 - The history of Summer Lansdown and how she was before she became a Power Ranger.

* EPISODE 9 - Ranger Yellow Part 2 - Summer’s parents return and want her to get married in order to make their family rich once again.

* EPISODE 10 - Ranger Blue - The history of Flynn McAllistair and how he has wanted to become a superhero.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Power Rangers RPM: Race for Corinth” is presented in Full Screen (1:33:1). For the most part, the picture quality is much better than what you would see on television. As for audio, the series is presented in Dolby Digital Stereo Sound. I preferred listening to the series with my home theater receiver set on all channels featuring stereo sound. But otherwise, the series is front channel driven.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are no special features included on the DVD.

JUDGMENT CALL:

It’s been awhile since I watched a sentai show. I figured that with my son now six-years-old and into these type of shows, having grown up watching sentai (starting with Ninja Sentai Kakuranger) and tokusatsu shows (Blue Swat), it was good to watch “Power Rangers RPM” and see how much things have changed since the shows aired in the US back in the 1990’s.

I actually enjoy the storyline of “Power Rangers RPM” as there is no group of high school kids who all hang out with each other and protect the city while listening to a robot, nor do we have any goofy duo’s for comedy relief. The idea of having the Power Rangers protect humanity’s safe haven in a post-apocalyptic setting is actually pretty cool. Also, it was actually interesting to see a ranger (green)who can’t fight and is part of the group. Never saw that one coming but it definitely makes up for interesting episodes.

With that being said, of course, there is still some campiness with the show and of course, it’s important to remember that these shows are targeted for children, so serious minded parents or people may want to throw any logic out the door. And although the show is shot in New Zealand, they do their best of not speaking with any of their accent (with the exception of the blue ranger).

Overall, as a parent, I watched the episodes with my six-year-old son and the only thing I had to warn him is in one scene, two rangers try to defend a mother who is with her baby (that is inside a stroller) and of course, the Rangers pick up the stroller and use it as a weapon (while the baby is inside) against the enemies. Of course, this series has always had the power rangers fighting their enemies, so concerned parents will want to watch the show with their children to make sure if its a series appropriate for their own children.

And of course, adult sentai fans, the series is quite enjoyable for you too!

So far, the second volume of “Power Rangers RPM” is a fun and intriguing series that I can see children enjoying. Although the second volume features more on character development and some mecha action and some weapon usage, the series is during a time where everything is experimental and Dr. K and the Power Rangers are testing technology out. So, hopefully down the line we will see the series start to employ some cool weapons and possibly more battles between their combined robot vs. a monster.

Overall, another enjoyable volume of “Power Rangers RPM”!

I got this DVD for two reasons: “The Last Mastery” and “Lupin in Paradise”. These are the final two episodes in this DVD and I believe are the best. Man, talk about saving the best for last!

Being used to watching this show on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, I was really pleased in seeing the DVD’s preservation’s of each episode’s opening and ending themes, although it’s repetitive because they’re all the same. The eyecatches are also preserved.

As usual, I’m disappointed that the episode previews were only matched up with their respective previous episode. That means there’s no preview for the first episode shown, “Black Panther/My Birthday Pursuit”, but there’s a preview for “Witch in the Fourth Dimension/Auntie Ballistic”, which is in the next DVD, “Mission: Irresistible”.

But all in all, if you like the episodes in Thieves’ Paradise, then by all means, get it.

I loved this show based in the comic books of Monkey Punch. It follows the adventures of master thief Lupin the Third nephew of the French Arsene Lupin and his gang composed by Goemon Ishikawa a master samurai and Deitsuke Jigen a cold blooded gunman.Sometimes joins to the band Fujiko Mine a bussom beautiful lady expert in conning and also thieving.Where the most valuable or expensive treasure or antique is Lupin the Third and his gang trying to rob it.The Dvd has 5 episodes that are in order as they originally broadcasted with the preview and even the commercials break. The series are well translated and the voices of the dubbers are quite similar to original japanese. The only flaw in this Dvd is that the English subtitles are the translation of the Japanese version not the English dubbed version.Sound and picture quality are more than average.I will wait for next volume.

I didn’t read the product description and was disappointed when I received not the first DVD with 6 episodes plus extras, but a mini DVD with the first episode only. This first episode doesn’t have the opening music and animation of the rest of the series - one of the things that I personally most wanted. I blame myself for being a lazy consumer - don’t YOU be one!

I’m not exactly sure what this is yet but a bunch of sites have been saying it’s the first episode. I’m not sure why they would just put the first episode sepratly but I’m guessing it’s uncut or something…of course I’m giving it five stars cause’ I love Invader Zim (I didn’t like Mortos the Soul Stealer much but I still liked it…) lol anyway buy this or an eil regien of monkeys shall fall pon your doomed head lol…

First off, I have to confess a measure of confusion about this particular documentary. I watched a video clearly identified as Voodoo Secrets from the History Channel, but it ran almost ninety minutes (the label shows fifty minutes) and seems to correspond rather closely with the description of an A&E documentary on the history of Voodoo. Still, the box, the VHS label, and the documentary itself identified this as Voodoo Secrets, and my search of bibliographic records of this title indicate the running time is listed incorrectly on the label, so I’ve done all I can to make sure I am reviewing the correct item here.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Voodoo Secrets! Click Here

As for the video itself, it offers an informative, detailed look at voodoo from its origins in western Africa to its different manifestations in the Western Hemisphere, particularly New Orleans and Haiti, focusing on voodoo as a religion. Acknowledging its negative connotations in western society, it seeks to demystify and explain some of voodoo’s more esoteric features even as it makes the case that this ancient religion has influenced the world around it to a surprising extent. I think it takes this way too far, suggesting that rock ‘n’ roll - and Elvis Presley in particular - were influenced greatly by the rhythms and movements of the music and dancing of voodoo ceremonies.

I learned a lot about voodoo from this documentary, but I don’t know that I feel any differently about it - you’re still talking about a religion with an indeterminate number of gods, each of whom is quite human in tastes, reverence of a serpent god, the use of human remains in voodoo ceremonies, animal sacrifice (and, at least in the past, the drinking of the sacrifice’s blood), possession, divination, communication with dead ancestors, and a belief in zombification. I do, however, have a deeper appreciation of voodoo as a religion and not just some kind of black magic mumbo jumbo, thanks to interviews with voodoo practitioners and initiates as well as several scholars.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Voodoo Secrets! Click Here

Perhaps the most interesting bit of information this documentary presents is voodoo’s interrelationship with other religions. New Orleans’ most famous voodoo priestess, Marie Laveau, we are told, was a devout Catholic who attended Mass daily, and at least one voodoo group featured here believes that other religions can actually enhance the powers of voodoo. Another interesting bit of information is the Supreme Court’s unanimous 1993 decision that protects animal sacrifice for religious purposes.

What this documentary does best is show you what voodoo is all about, courtesy of those who follow its traditions. Rather than letting talking heads expound upon voodoo practices, you are able to watch examples of divination, spirit possession, and ceremonial dancing for yourself (fortunately, the viewer is spared the sight of any animal sacrifice). The academics contribute much to the discussion, particularly in terms of putting everything into a larger context, but this really is a most unbiased and illuminating look at a belief system few of us in the West can even begin to understand.

This documentary basically says, “Yes, animal sacrifices are involved and yes, it can be used for evil purposes, but voodoo is a long-standing, highly-numerous religion that deserves respect.” I’m cool with that! The documentary implies, “Why is it that Saint Patrick, who rid Ireland of snakes, is respected, but an African god whose symbol is the snake is viewed as dangerous?” Right on! Fight the Eurocentrism!

Too often, continental Africans, black West Indians, and African Americans will fight tooth and nail not to be associated with each other. But for those of us who believe in Black unity, often called pan-Africanists, you will love this work. The documentary’s first segment takes place in Benin, the second in Haiti, and the last in New Orleans. In each place, you see beautiful black skins, colorful clothes, and great music. You also see communities (men, women, and children) united in worshipping African-originated spirits and gods.

My only critique of this film is that Spanish-language Santeria and Portuguese-language Candombl’e is not brought up. Not only Anglophone and Francophone Blacks worship in traditional West African styles. Those in Brazil and Hispanophone Latin American do and can too.

A view FROM THE TERRACE is what Paul Newman’s character David Alfred Eaton has of his future wife Mary (JoAnne Woodward). The screen play was based on a best-selling novel of the same name by John O’Hara. Given it was released in the 1950s when sex on the screen was verboten and not much more explicit in novels (ban a book in Boston), one must appreciate the work it took for Newman and Woodward to give these performances.

Like many other teenagers of my generation, I was “in love” with Paul Newman. Newman could make female hearts flutter by simply looking at the camera with his big blue eyes. Many other teens preferred Marlon Brando, his peer and rival for female affection. I believe these two actors were the Leonardo de Caprio and Brad Pitt of their day, although in the long run, Newman (like de Caprio) has had more staying power and gracefully made the transition to mature roles.

In the 1950s, to see a film one had to attend a theater, where the screen was usually covered with a huge velvet curtain. FTT played at the Center theater in my small town, and I saw the film six times after it was released. I was able to get into the theater for a quarter, and as my allowance was $3, this was no small sacrifice. So, you might say this film was one of my all time favorites.

Watching it again almost 50 years later, I wondered how I would react, and of course the passage of time and arrival of many other actors and vast changes in filmmaking have affected the way I view the film and Newman, but I still like him enormously, and this film holds it’s own, though the storyline may seem archaic.

This film is about infidelity and divorce and the price of success, a story line that may be lost on generations raised in an age of no-fault divorces and dual earner households. Once upon a time, divorce and infidelity were considered absolutely scandalous, and financially disastrous. In fact, if you divorced, your life was ruined. Many couples stayed together and suffered the ignominy of a cheating spouse. FTT was a ground-breaking film because it tackled these issues head-on.

The DVD version of the film is well done, and the price reasonable (technicolor and cinemascope production). Do your self a favorite, buy this DVD and add it to the shelf where you keep CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF and other 50’s favorites.

Every few years, I sit back and enjoy “From the Terrace” for what it is. As good old fashioned “potboiler”, John O Hara’s screen adaptation is not quite as sprawling as say….Edna Ferber’s works, but nonetheless is a decent potboiler in its own right. Alfred (Paul Newman), discharged from the Navy after WW II is the ambitious, disaffected son of nouveau riche steel mill owner Samuel Eaton, (Leon Ames). Seeking to make his own unique mark in the world he spurns his father’s hopes of joining the business and decides his fortune is to be made elsewhere. Along the way, he meets his future blue-blooded trophy wife Mary St. John (Joanne Woodward) and soon discovers her appetites are far in excess even to his own ambitions. Landing a job at a prestigious Wall Street firm in an oblique way that is a potboiler’s trademark, Alfred comes under the watchful eye of old money and traditional expectations by J.D. MacHardie (masterfully portrayed by Felix Aylmer). I very much enjoyed all the scenes in which Aylmer’s MacHardie was highlighted and I can almost smell the stodginess of old money, ritual table manners, wood paneled walls, cigars, and brandy that were part of his ultra-conservative environment. Soon enough, while on a trip to scout business opportunities, Alfred meets Natalie (Ina Balin), the unattached daughter of a wealthy coal mine owner. Knowing full well of his marital status, she consents, even encourages his attention and unfaithfulness. Balin manages to pull this off with a naive sweetness without ever seeming cheap or trashy. Infidelity is a major theme in this work and I’m sure its frank discussion must have sparked many a controversy when this film was released very early in 1960. Veteran actress Myrna Loy was given near top billing as Alfred’s alcoholic and unfaithful mother, yet her on-screen performance was limited to the first reel of this nearly 2 1/2 hour film. I enjoyed the brief on screen appearance of young Barbara Eden as a flirtatious socialite. Patrick O’Neal was perfectly cast as the smarmy Dr. Jim Roper, the illicit lover of Mary St. John. Over his long acting career, Paul Newman has delivered solid performances again and again. This is one of his lesser known works but serves as a fine example of why he was so popular with the audience as a silver screen heartthrob. Watching this film today and being mindful of his lasting marriage to Joanne Woodward just serves to make this movie all the more compelling to me. I hope you will agree.
