With its hallucinatory visions of crawling dead babies and a grungy plunge into the filthiest toilet in Scotland, you might not think Trainspotting could have been one of the best movies of 1996, but Danny Boyle’s film about unrepentant heroin addicts in Edinburgh is all that and more. That doesn’t make it everybody’s cup of tea (so unsuspecting viewers beware), but the film’s blend of hyperkinetic humor and real-life horror is constantly fascinating, and the entire cast (led by Ewan McGregor and Full Monty star Robert Carlyle) bursts off of the screen in a supernova of outrageous energy. Adapted by John Hodge from the acclaimed novel by Irving Welsh, the film was a phenomenal hit in England, Scotland, and (to a lesser extent) the U.S. For all of its comedic vitality and invigorating filmmaking, the movie is no ode to heroin, nor is it a straight-laced cautionary tale. Trainspotting is just a very honest and well-made film about the nature of addiction, and it doesn’t pull any punches when it is time to show the alternating pleasure and pain of substance abuse. –Jeff Shannon

Yet One Last Thing… is neither crass nor a sex comedy, but rather a surprisingly touching exploration of taking chances, mortality, spirituality, and the price of love. Dylan (Michael Angarano, Sky High) has been granted a conventional dying wish by a foundation, but at the televised press conference he changes his mind and asks for a weekend with blond sex symbol Nikki Sinclair (Sunny Mabrey, Snakes on a Plane). The consequnces unfold realistically: The supermodel (who has her own problems) and her agent (Gina Gershon, Bound) show up for a brief photo opportunity, then split–but Dylan, with the help of his friends, goes to New York to follow up on her promise to go out with him if he visits. A huge, abandoned oil tanker becomes its own world as squatters make their lives upon it. Presiding over this haphazard society is Captain Nemat (Ali Nassirian), a leader who’s part visionary, part supply sergeant, part snake oil salesman. As he bounds up and down the tanker’s halls and stairways, he charmingly persuades the families living in rusted rooms to obey his rules while he hustles the goods they all need to survive. But this microcosm is threatened from within (the ship is slowly sinking) and without (the owners want to sell it for scrap metal), forcing Nemat to seek a radical solution. Meanwhile, Nemat’s protege Ahmad (Hossein Farzi-Zadeh, The Beautiful City) has fallen in love with a girl who’s already promised to marry another man. While Iron Island can be read as an allegory about life in the Muslim world, life on board the tanker feels organic and follows its own internal logic, making the movie vivid and vital. The movie’s political conundrums feel implacably real and have no easy or absolute solution. But Nassirian is the movie’s core; he holds Iron Island together with the same unqunchable drive that Nemat uses to hold together his ship-bound kingdom. Sonic and his sidekicks are determined to thwart a plan that would turn their Land of the Sky into the equivalent of The Land of Darkness, which lurks beneath the surface (and is obviously the former planet Earth). So they plow through to the center of the planet and the ancient city of Robotropolis (the former New York City?) to do righteous battle. The big qustion of the day is whether the usually evil Dr. Robotnik is telling the truth for once or sending the good guys into a trap. The tape’s producers suggest viewers be at least 7 years old because of its violence, but the rudimentary nature of the animation will probably make it appealing only to hard-core action fans among the older-kid crowd. –Kimberly Heinrichs

Barbara Hammer takes newsreels, stills, health films, and even pornography and whirls them into a cheeky lesbians-are-everywhere cultural souffle. The piece is not entirely successful; at times it gets tedious and a bit heavy-handed, and one needs to have a high tolerance for the dripping-things-onto-film-stock techniqu. Still, the spirit is one of subversive fun as Hammer intercuts straight-laced news reports from the ’40s with lurid pulp novel covers to suggest that there might be more to these ladies than meets the eye. This film isn’t for everyone, but for young women who are interested in a good laugh while they reclaim a bit of their cultural identity, History Lessons may be just the thing. –Ali Davis
