Boxing movies have had a set of conventions that started in the 1930s and ran all the way up through the Rocky series and beyond. There’s the hard-luck underdog contender, the talented boxer who’s manipulated by crooked promoters and managers, the outside-the-ring love affair, the score to settle for a fellow boxer, the family tensions over the boxer’s career and the climactic match against the big mean champion. Knockout manages to bring all of those ingredients to the table and mix them together. Maria Conchita Alonso plays the lovely and talented Belle, a young boxer with a future. Her dad is an ex-prizefighter himself, pursuing a career in law enforcement; his partner is Belle’s love interest. Belle’s mother died of a brain tumor some 15 years previous. When her friend, homegirl, and sparring partner is put in the hospital by the champion, Belle trains with a vengeance to take the title away and even the score for her friend’s sake. This is a movie that tries very hard but is so riddled with the hoariest boxing cliches and trite dialogu that it can never rise above being heavy-handed and predictable. It’s too bad, because the direction is competent and the performances are strong, but the by-the-numbers storyline breaks no new ground whatsoever. Granted, it’s hard to rewrite the rules of the boxing movie, but Knockout’s brand of prizefight melodrama veers from the formula only by featuring a Latino setting and female fighters. On the plus side, the fight scenes are well-choreographed and tough, but they have the weight of the rest of the movie working against them. Knockout isn’t bad, but for even the most casual fan of boxing movies, you’ve seen it before. –Jerry Renshaw

As long as there is a need for adolescent male sexual fantasy, there will be an audience for Heavy Metal. Released in 1981 and based on stories from the graphic magazine of the same name (possibly the greatest publication to simultaneously provoke imagination and masturbation), the film has since become the most popular single title in Columbia/TriStar’s entire film library. That’s an amazing fact considering just how silly and senseless the movie really is–an aimless, juvenile amalgam of disjointed stories and clashing visual styles, employing hundreds of animators from around the world with a near-total absence of creative cohesion. It remains, for better and worse, a midnight-movie favorite for the stoner crowd–a movie best enjoyed by randy adolescents or near-adults in an altered state of consciousness.

With a framing story about a glowing green orb claiming to be the embodiment of all evil, the film shuttles through eight episodic tales of sci-fi adventure, each fuled by some of the most wretched rock music to emerge from the 1980s. The most consistent trademark is an abundance of blood-splattering violence and wet-dream sex, the latter involving a succession of huge-breasted babes who shed their clothes at the drop of a G-string. It’s all quite fun in its rampantly brainless desire to ful the young male libido, and for all its incoherence Heavy Metal remains impressive for the ambitious artistry of its individual segments. Riverdance, the Irish hard-shoe sensation that took PBS viewers by storm, underwent its second incarnation with Live from New York City, a 1996 performance filmed at Radio City Music Hall. While most of the attributes from 1995’s Riverdance: The Show remain–the dazzling ensemble choreography, Bill Whelan’s energetic score, and the New Age-y view of Celtic mythology–the most significant difference is at the top, where Colin Dunne replaced bombastic lead dancer Michael Flatley. Though lacking Flatley’s bravura, Dunne is a superb technician who works well with Flatley’s former co-lead, Jean Butler. Flamenco dancer Maria Pagis returns, as do the Riverdance Singers (formerly known as Anuna) with soloist Katie McMahon and the orchestra with fiery fiddler Eileen Ivers.

About a half-hour longer than the 1995 original, Live from New York City expands upon the second act’s theme of the Irish leaving their homeland for other parts of the world. “Lift the Wings” becomes a set piece for the people who are saying goodbye (it’s hard not to miss the original’s solo voice of Aine Um Cheallaigh), and a new song, “Heal Their Hearts,” is a showcase anthem for bass Morgan Crowley. In the most engaging new number, “Trading Taps,” a trio of Irish dancers faces off against two urban American tappers. While much of this follow-up show will be familiar to those who know the original, it’s different enough to be enjoyed on its own terms. It’s also more stylishly shot, but that’s also its biggest drawback–frenetic editing that allows only brief glimpses of the dancers and leaves the viewer dizzy. –David Horiuchi
